TaRYaG is the acronym for the numerical value of 613, for the 613 mitzvos (commandments) found in the Torah. The following list of mitzvos follows the opinion of Rabbi Moses ben Maimon zt”l, also known as Rambam or Maimonides, as he lists them in his Mishneh Torah. Many of these mitzvos cannot be observed at this time for various reasons (to include the absence of a Temple).
First some background information regarding Biblical mitzvos:
There are two categories of Mitzvos:
There are 248 Positive Mitzvos (Mitzvot Aseh) or things that you must do.
There are 365 Negative Mitzvos (Mitzvot Lo Sa’aseh) or things you must not do.
All 613 mitzvos can be divided into one of ten categories that make up the Eseres Hadibros (The Ten Statements [mistakenly reffered to as "Commandments" because there are actual more than ten mitzvos/commandments listed therein]. The first five ”statements” fit into the “greatest” commandment: “to love HaShem your G-d with all of your heart, soul and strength (Deut. 6:4-5 [& Luke 10:27 for the Christian reader])” and the second five of the Devarim fit into the “other” greatest commandment: “to love your fellow man as yourself (Lev. 19:18 [& again Luke 10:27])”. So, in essence, to follow the two “greatest commandments”, one has to follow the five respective statements of each division from the Ten Commandments, and then to follow the Ten Commandments, one must follow (where applicable) the correlating 613 commandments. So, the key to inheriting eternal life as a Jew (for the Christian reader again as even taught by Jesus in Luke 10:25-28 which he received from Leviticus 18:5), is to truly follow the two “summaries of the Torah”; by closely following the Ten Statements–and thereby sincerely living the 613 mitzvot (where applicable).
Many Christians have a misconception that Judaism is a burdensome and legalistic religion and point to the number of commandments (613 with all of their practical applications) as proof. However, there are approximately 1050 reiterations and additional commandments given in the Apostolic Writings. Based on the given method of measurement, Christianity is far more burdensome.
